Match
Report - Juniors
The
Bridgewater Canal is known as one of the fairest venues in the
country for team contests. The Grappenhall and Thelwall lengths,
just to the south of Warrington, have fairly consistent stocks
of roach, perch, gudgeon and skimmers, with odd bonus bream and
carp. A consistent small-fish approach was expected to be the
likely winning team tactic, and local knowledge tipped
Warrington's teams as home favourites, although any of the
18-strong field of Junior teams, and 12 teams of Inters, could
have been contenders.
In
the Junior event, it was a consistent performer who shined
through to take the individual crown. Richard Pitts (15)
of Leeds (Team Gem Black) put 4lbs 10ozs of fish on the scales,
from a tough E-section, where the next best weight was just
1-8-0, caught by Richard's teammate Tommy Pitts.
Junior Runner-Up spot went to Daniel Boyle (Warrington
Black) who took 60 small fish on the long pole using squatt and
pinkie off the end peg A1. Barnton & Frodsham AC's rod, Liam
Wright, has spent the last season fishing Warrington junior
club matches, and his practice paid off for his 3-7-0 of
skimmers that secured 3rd place from an unfancied peg 557.
Led
by the individual winner, an experienced Team Gem Black made the
most of a squatt and pinkie approach to win the match by a
3-point margin from Barnsley's second string. Pride of Derby
Juniors took third, nudging Warrington Gold into 4th.
Intermediates
Chopped
worm turned out to be the key to finding the larger bream on the
Intermediate sections. Ian Reynolds made the journey from
Suffolk worthwhile, finding 3 proper specimens right against the
far bank opposite the sports club to win the match with 9-7-0.
Rising northern star, Shaun Keaveney of Leigh Ospreys
managed 7lbs of bream and skimmers from a windswept 'C' section,
despite losing a potential match-winning carp on worm.
Completing the top 3 was Barnsley's superstar, Jonathon Plows,
who put together 5-6-0 on squatt from A section.
Local
favourites Warrington Gold eased their way to victory by focusing
on skimmers using squatts as bait. Nearest rivals were
Wakefield-based outfit Walton Match Group, who were tailed
closely by Leigh Ospreys.
Reserves
Always an important feature of NJAA contests is the reserves
match. Eddie McKenna battled to hold his pole against the
wind to put together the match-winning 1-4-12 net. Daniel
Moore of Barnton & Frodsham AC took 2nd and Michael
Chung (Warrington AA) came a creditable 3rd in his first
ever team match.
