Report
England’s footballers may
have only found the net once on Saturday, but the young anglers
from Mosella Farnborough filled their nets to take the NJAA
Knockout trophy at Hampton Springs. And whereas Beckham and co.
may not have played to their full potential in Frankfurt,
Farnborough put in a near perfect performance to secure the win
and claim their first NJAA win in style.
The
odds looked to be slashed at the start of the match, and a close
competition was expected between the 2 pre-match favourites,
Farnborough and last year’s winners Worksop, who both drew the
end pegs. However it was Farnborough who were clear winners,
with 2 section wins, 3 seconds and a third for a points score of
just 12. Afterwards, Farnborough manager Colin Dance paid
tribute to his team and said that their decision to target small
fish rather than sit it out for carp had worked.
There
was a tie on points for 3rd place between the Coventry Canal
Juniors and Pride of Derby Juniors. Coventry claimed the podium
place after a count-back on weight revealed they had managed 5kg
more than their fellow Midlands rivals.
The individual match was a
close affair. Anglers across the Hampton Springs complex were
catching on all baits, with corn, worm, meat and pellet all
bringing fish regularly to the net. All pools were producing
roach, crucians, tench and skimmers, with small carp, odd barbel
and chub featuring too.
Rock pool fished the most
consistently, with crucians and small tench making up the bulk
of catches, although none of the anglers in A and B section
managed to top 20lbs. The big fish action was happening on Long
Island pool which hosted D, E and F sections. A head-to-head
battle developed between Worksop’s Marc Playforth pegged on
the island F section, and Barnsley’s Danny Fugler halfway
along E.
Both anglers had tempted
decent carp, but the result swung Marc’s way in the final hour
as he took an extra 3 lumps on the long pole to contribute to
his 17.9Kg total (approx 40lbs). Danny Fugler (Barnsley Juniors)
managed 15.83Kg which was good enough for runner-up spot, with
Worksop rod Jason Goulding taking 3rd with the top
weight off Meadows (14.23Kg)
