Match
Report (by Martin James, Match Organiser)
Garswood
Hall played host to the North West qualifying heat, and for the
second year running, the match was fished at their club water,
Landgate Lodges. The main lodge hosted the main event, with the
reserves fishing the smaller 'Channel' lodge. A rainy Lancashire
day did little to damped the enthusiasm of the anglers from the
4 competing clubs, Garswood Hall,
Warrington Anglers, Leigh
Ospreys and Stalybridge & District Junior Angling
Section (SADJAS). Sensibly, all of the adults present agreed to
leave the pegs and take up an observation point at the car park
once the match started. This took the pressure of the young
anglers, and allowed them to focus on their fishing.
Once
the match was underway, it was soon apparent that bites were
going to be harder to come by than in practice sessions.
Landgate lodge has good stocks of tench and bream, but the
shoals of roach are quite unpredictable, and so most anglers had
opted to target the larger fish, using pole-fished soft pellet,
worm or caster. Thomas Hadley on end peg in F section was one of
the first to find a better stamp, with a decent tench of around
3lbs taken on caster. Meanwhile, on A section, Michael Chase
(SADJAS) had found some quality skimmers, whilst Jake Prescott
(Garswood) was matching him fish for fish with small tench. With
Aaron Lowe of Garswood catching well on B section, and Jon
Andrews of Warrington finding a few small tench on 'E', the
results looked to be very close, and at the 'All Out' it was too
close for the observers to call.
The final result could not have been closer. Only 3 points
separated the 4 teams, with a tie on 15 points for second place
between Leigh and SADJAS demanding a count-back on weight.
Garswood had taken the top spot with 16 points, with Warrington
in 4th with 14pts. After a few tense moments as calculators were
put into overdrive, the result was announced that Leigh Ospreys
had clinched the 2nd qualifying spot by just 90 grams! The Leigh
team had to thanks their 2 section winners (Thomas Hadley and
Marcus Littlewood) for contributing most of their weight.
Warrington's James Postlethwaite took the reserves match by a
margin of just 2 ounces. His catch of 3 small carp plus a few
bits came off the end peg 70 on the Channel lodge.
